Captain’s match report: Alton captain Scott Myers on his side’s hard fought victory over Havant

10th May 2017

Week 1

“We lost the toss on a very dry and bare looking wicket and Havant chose to bat first. Overseas player Sean Jamison started us off in perfect style with his first wicket for the club. Ben Mortimer then ran through the Havant top order reducing them to 57-5, and finishing with figures of 4-37. We were very aware of the quality and depth of their batting line up and this started to show. A few decent partnerships took their score up to 214-8 which we were very pleased with.

We started off our innings in aggressive style through Alex Hammond who got us off to a flyer scoring a quick fire 30 on a pitch that proving harder to score quickly on as the game progressed. We then lost 2 quick wickets but were ahead of the rate. A 50 partnership between myself and Dan Harris took the score to 112-2 before we lost 2 wickets in 2 balls. In the past this would have resulted in a classic Alton collapse, but after last year the confidence in our batting line up has grown. Another 50 partnership, this time between myself and Mark Heffernan saw us get to 173 before he was out to Richard Hindley (3-35).  Myself and Sean Jamison got us down to the last over, needing 3 to win, which was bowled by Ben Walker. 1st ball was a dot, 2nd ball Jamison got hold of, but was caught by Hindley on the boundary. I then hit a single leaving us needing 2 from 3. Next ball Mortimer pushed a firm drive to mid off and we tried to take a single but the Havant fielder picked up clean and hit the stumps and Mortimer was run out. 2 from 2.

Next ball was a play and miss from me, leaving us needing 2 from the last ball to win. Walker bowled a full wide ball that was inches off being the perfect yorker but luckily I managed to squeeze it away through cover point for 4 to see us home. Cue the celebrations as this was the first time we have ever beaten Havant in a league game.  A fantastic all round performance from our boys has set up very  nicely for the season and I am hoping we can push on and not have this win as just a one off”
