ACADEMY’S CHRIS CARVES CAREER-BEST KNOCK IN STONE

A century sixth-wicket stand between teenage duo Chris Stone and Jamie Miller paved the way to a 113-run victory over relegation threatened Ventnor in the only ECB Southern Electric Premier League match to survive the wet weather.
The teams played a full 50-overs per side match at Newclose, where the result continues to leave Ventnor in trouble at the bottom.  They gleaned only five bonus points from the match but, with two games remaining, are still effectively 15 points clear of bottom side Lymington, whose visit to South Wilts was washed out after tea.
Ventnor seemed poised for better things after winning the toss and reducing the Young Hawks to 71-5, skipper Benny Howell making 38.  But Portsmouth Grammar School’s Chris Stone, with a Premier League best 91, and Bembridge-based Jamie Miller, who scored 46, turned the tide with a crucial 112-run stand.
Aided by a late 21 not out from Matt King and 27 runs in the extras column, the Academy went on to post 248-9.  Jack Sheppard (2-20) struck two early blows, but Ian Hilsum (37) and Adam Hose (20) took Ventnor’s response to 68-2.  The remainder of the batting fell away, however, with Howell slicing through the lower order to finish with 4-11.  Ventnor were dismissed for 135, Miller taking 2-19 with his leg spin.
South Wilts had lurched to 39-3, chasing Lymington’s 157-6, when the rains came at Lower Bemerton.  Glyn Treagus (28) and Morgan Rushbrook (23) guided Lymington to 71-1 before Camerson Grierson’s unbeaten 39 took the visitors to 157-7. A double strike by Rushbrook (2-22) accounted for Tom Morton (0) and Simon Branston, while Eddie Abel also perished before the rains came.
Former Havant skipper Lawrie Prittipaul returned to his roots to make 76 as St Cross Symondians totalled 203-7 in 50 overs against the defending champions.  Jack Jenkins (40) and James Burridge, with 39 not out, helped the score along, but the rains came with Havant 9 without loss in reply.
Bashley’s match at Alton was postponed.
