NO CHANGE AT THE PREMIER 3 SUMMIT AS RAIN SWEEPS IN
Eight points continues to separate the top four clubs in the Southern Electric Premier League, Division 3 championship race after all nine scheduled matches were either cancelled or abandoned after tea. The matches involving leaders Portsmouth (v Sarisbury Athletic) and the vital promotion clash between Tichborne Park and Liphook & Ripsley were postponed. The other seven games started but abandoned. Calmore Sports ran up 233 all out against Fareham, with openers Mike Wallace (44) and Mark Archer (40) providing a steady base. Danny Durrant (3-27) enjoyed his spoils late in the innings after Tom Pegler (35) and Darren Vann (34) provided mid-afternoon security. Fareham, set a revised 196 to win in 36 overs, scored 30 off five overs before the rains came. Fair Oak were well on top in the mid-table contest with Easton & Martyr Worthy at Lapstone Park before the weather had the last word and rescued the visitors from likely defeat. Ben Powis (4-10) and Andy Sturman (3-8) had bowled beautifully to reduce Easton from 67-3 77 all out, only Richard Vaughan (17) and Farhan Bashir (25) reaching double figures. Oaks also contributed 18 in wides to their visitors’ modest total. Despite losing Sturman and Stuart Martin to Bashir and Azlem Hamid, Fair Oak seemed poised for victory when they reached 34-2 in 10.1 overs, skipper Ed Kemp in charge with 16 not out. But then, the bad weather that had dogged the match all afternoon returned with a vengeance, leaving the umpires no option but to abandon the game. Similarly, Hambledon were pulling the strings, reducing Old Tauntonians & Romsey to 73-5 after they had posted 204 at the Romsey Sports Centre. Relegation threatened Bashley (Rydal) II were left frustrated when rain caused the premature abandonment of their visit to United Services. George Marshall had scored 81 for US, whose 155 had been reduced to a 101-run target off 25 overs. Bashley were 43-1 when the rains came after eight overs of their reply. An unbeaten 68 by Tim Vokes proved to no avail as Sparsholt totalled 192 against Totton & Eling II, who were unable to begin their reply. Trojans’ match against basement club Portsmouth & Southsea was also called off at tea with the hosts having recovered from 32-5 to make 166.
