HOOK BATSMEN GET INTO TWENTY20 MODE
Southern Electric Cup finalists Hook & Newnham Basics got into twenty20 mode with a 281-run fest against Premier League Division 2 rivals Hartley Wintney. They wobbled at 57-3, but after Ross Hunter (85) had been involved in sizeable partnerships with Neil Marsh (52) and Richard Wilcock (28) finished with a formidable 281-8. Hartley Wintney, who had won their previous five games, were asked to score a rain trimmed 249 in 39 overs, but two early strikes by Jordan Hobday (3-24) had them firmly on the back foot. Scott Baldwin (47) and Richard Norris (36) rallied, but HW lost five cheap wickets from 106-3 to 146-8 – Kevin Poulter (3-40) doing the damage – before closing at 181 all out. Havant 2nd XI and Hursley Park are making a belated – but probably too late – bid for Division 2 survival. Bottom all summer, Havant scored a second consecutive and significant win by beating Village Cup semi-finalists Rowledge by ten runs. Andrew Galliers (60) and Nick Hodgson (52) scored half-centuries as Havant totalled 199 (Steve Matthews 32). Rowledge were set a rain cut 192 off 46 overs, but fell ten runs short despite Ricky Yates (66) and Gary Clapham (32), who had the visitors well placed at 103-2 until the middle-order caved in. Hodgson took 4-34 as Rowledge fell to 181 all out. Hursley Park chased down 195 off 45 overs to beat Paultons by two wickets at The Quarters. Paultons’ 200-6 (Stuart Magee 69) was trimmed to 195 off 5 overs, but Hursley got home on the strength of half-centuries by Harry Cox (50), but more particularly Chris Wheeler, whose 56 not out came at a stage when Hursley were struggling at 135-7.
